Engine Line Configurations

Gryphon Diesel Engines will produce an engine line whose horsepower range will be from 10 to 750 HP (and possibly 800 HP) with 1, 2, 3 and 6 cylinders, using only one cylinder bore size.

The diesel engine block design will come in the following three engine configurations:  Inline, “V” (50 to 60 degrees) and Single piston.
Below are listed the different engines we will offer, with their different HP ratings.

All configurations have the following (unless otherwise noted):

  • Bore x Stroke: 90 mm X 85 mm (oversquare ratio of 1.05, for high 5,500 RPM operation)
  • Cylinder displacement:  540 cc (32.9 cu in)

First engine configuration – PHASE 1:

INLINE-3  (IL-3), 3 cylinders, with total engine displacement of 1.62 liters (1,622 cc):

  • super-charged (SC) versions with 75 HP, 90 HP, 115 HP, 150 HP
  • twin-super-charged (TSC) versions with 200 HP, 225 HP, 250 HP, 300 HP, 350 HP

Second engine configuration – PHASE 2:

“V” block configuration (55 degrees), limited to 2,500 RPM -2,800 RPM
– Stroke increased to 90 mm, Bore x Stroke: 90 mm X 90 mm (square engine)

V-6; 6 cylinders, with total engine displacement of 3.43 liters (3,436 cc):

  • super-charged (SC) versions with 350 HP, 400 HP
  • twin-super-charged (TSC) versions with 500 HP, 600 HP, 700 HP, 800 HP, 900 HP

Optional: V-8; 8 cylinders, with total engine displacement of 4.58 liters (4,582 cc):

  • twin-super-charged (TSC) versions with 900 HP, 1,000 HP, 1,200 HP

Optional: V-12; 12 cylinders, with total engine displacement of 6.87 liters (6,873 cc):

  • twin-super-charged (TSC) versions with 1,500 HP, 1,800 HP, 2,000 HP

Third engine configuration – PHASE 3:

INLINE-2 (IL-2), 2 cylinders, with total engine displacement of 1.08 liter (1,081 cc):

  • crankcase aspirated (NA) versions with 30 HP, 35 HP, 45 HP, 55 HP
  • super-charged (SC) versions with 75 HP, 100 HP

Fourth engine configuration:

Single piston (S-1), 1 cylinder, with total engine displacement of 0.54 liter (540 cc):

  • crankcase aspirated (NA) versions with 10 HP, 15 HP, 20 HP, 25 HP

Fifth engine configuration (optional):

Single piston (S-1), 1 cylinder, with total engine displacement of 0.25 liter (250 cc):
– For use in very small and portable power generators

  • crankcase aspirated (NA) versions with 3 HP, 5 HP, 8 HP

NEXT DEVELOPMENT:

For larger horsepower output applications Gryphon Diesel has chosen the opposed-piston configuration. It lowers by half the speed and travel of the piston, which in turn provides a dramatically compact and superlight arrangement with exceptionally high efficiency and very low friction. Thermal efficiency (TE) of the engine can exceed 60%. It will employ the same design approach used in the current engine line, alloys and systems; using 90% common parts with Scalable Engine Architecture (SEA) and Compact Engine Architecture (CEA), cutting costs and weight.

This engine line is super-charged (electric-driven) and will output 275 HP to 300 HP per liter and up to 7,500 HP.
The target power-to-weight ratio is 3.5:1 to 4:1 (0.30 lb/hp) with a maximum brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) of 0.20 lb/hp/hr.

Engine configurations proposed:

  • Cylinders arrangement: 2-Stroke, Deltic (triangle shape) with 3 opposed-piston cylinders per bank
    • Layouts: D3, D6, D9, D12, D18
    • Bore X Stroke: 98 mm X 185 mm
    • Trapped volume/cylinder: 1.4 liter (1,400 cc)
    • Cylinder to Bore ratio: 0.5:1
    • Compression ratio: 13:1 to 14:1
    • Max RPM: 3,000
    • Max engine diameter: 22 in. to 24 in. (560 mm to 610 mm)
    • Target power to weight ratio: 0.3 lb/hp
    • Target max BSFC: 0.18 lb/hp/hr to 0.20 lb/hp/hr
    • Target max horsepower per bank: 1,260 HP
